Our History

Bob%2BI_wheel%2Bmachine.jpg

1979: garage start-up.

In 1979, the late Bob Clark Sr. left his position as a District Conservationist for the Soil Conservation Service (SCS now NRCS) to start his own business. After years overseeing the construction and installation of waterway and drainage tile conservation projects at the SCS, Bob Sr. decided to buy a Spiecher 6060 wheel machine, and in a two-car garage, in a quite suburban neighborhood in Richmond, IN, Clark Farm Drainage was born.

A family tradition.

It wasn’t apparent to anyone at the time that the business Bob Sr. started would become a family tradition. Bob Sr. just wanted to farm and be his own boss, but didn’t have the money. Becoming a drainage contractor was as close as he could get. But that desire to make your own path in life took hold of his son and grandson too. Today, Clark Farm Drainage is a third-generation, family-owned business. We understand our customers’ desire to create a family legacy.

A pursuit of excellence.

There’s an old saying, “I never have the time to do it right the first time, but I always have the time to do it over.” We see countless farms undergo phase after phase of drainage improvements, implementing a patchwork approach based on the principle of never having enough time or money to do it right the first time. We’ve noticed these farms always have the time and money to do it over. We’ve built our business on the opposite concept: there is always time to do it right the first time.

Our Technologies

Computer Aided Design

Gone are the days of surveying fields with a laser, tripod, and sheet of graph paper. Today, RTK GPS, remote data, historical imagery, and advanced computer software are used to perform a complete watershed analysis and plan your farm’s place in it.

Geographic Information Systems

We utilize advanced software programs called Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to store, view, and analyze each aspect of the factors that support the water management assessment and planning decision making process on your farm.

Real-time Kinematic GPS

Through the deployment of RTK GPS technology, we are able to design and construct every aspect of your water management system down to a fraction of a centimeter, with continuously varied slopes and surfaces to optimize resources and returns.

Proprietary Assessment & Planning Tools

We’ve taken decades of university research, over 40 years of on-the-ground experience with farms, and combined them with engineering standards to create proprietary assessment and planning tools that ensure our plans make you effective and profitable.

Single-Pass Trenching & Plowing

With single-pass plowing we ensure maximum soil fracture, the highest level of grade control, perfect trench bottoms, and eliminate soil mixing during construction. When the pipe is too large or deep, we deploy our single-pass trenching equipment.

Excavating, Earthmoving, & HDD

Beyond being a full-service ag water management assessment, planing and construction company, we also operate a complete heavy civil construction division. We have the team and the know-how to perform or manage a variety of projects.
